Testimonials

Thank you, Jeffrey for your energy, creativity and commitment to the arts, museums and learning.

Robin Tuddenham, Chief Executive, Calderdale Council.

You could define a picture as a three-dimensional object presented in two
dimensions, but this is literally what Jeffrey achieves with his unwrapped works. That’s the joy of them!

Vic Allen

In common with earlier pieces Andrews produces paving stones of different dimensions with casts of contemporary, household objects embedded in the cement. In Ground Worker the fragments of an old lawn mower are fossilised in pigmented concrete; this machine, a casualty of technological evolution, has been superceded by Flymos and other electrically charged cutters and trimmers. As such the lawn mower is just one of the outmoded tools of 20th century Western homo sapiens horticulturus.

We are confronted by a future archaeology of our own time, explainable to our generation, but maybe as indecipherable to future generations as the graven impressions on cup-and-ring stones are to our own.

Alexandra Noble, ‘From Art to Archaeology’ South Bank Centre, London.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you Jeffrey.

You have been a professional colleague who has managed the unexpected with good grace and humour and created a vibrant programme for all the students involved.

Looking forward to working with you again in the future.

Linda Cowie, Co-Director, The Linking Network.

As a part of our Anglo-Saxon topic, Jeffrey arranged an archaeological dig and jewellery making session with our Year 5 class. These activities were so practical, fun and engaging. All the children were able to discover so much about how the Anglo-Saxons lived in a way that will stick with them so much longer than just reading about it.

Jeffrey really brings a lot of passion and enthusiasm to the activities he delivers, which only increases the enjoyment and enthusiasm the children have. We definitely hope to have him visit again!

Liz Cowton, Year 5 Teacher, Christchurch Primary School, Halifax.

In recent years Jeffrey Andrews has exhibited his ‘fossilized’ works in a variety of settings. Some are domestic objects set in paving stones which become obtrusive interventions into the everyday fabric of the street. Others are temporary installations for specific sites or have been constructed so that they may be adapted to a variety of spaces. His show at the South Bank Centre entitled Ground Worker ossified the component parts of a lawn mower, a recent and yet now obsolete piece of machinery, into pigmented cement. As we pick our way through the scattered pieces we become archaeologists of the recent past.

My daughter attended the weekly Halifax Saturday Art Club activities at Bankfield Museum from the age of 8 until she was 14 years old that Jeffrey managed and delivered; these creative sessions were always fun and informative.

Under Jeffrey’s guidance her artistic skills have flourished and he has become an inspiration for her, as she now wants to pursue a career in art and design.

I would highly recommend Jeffrey’s classes and sessions!

Today, we did no work at all because Jeffrey came in and it was so fun.

Year 4 pupil, Field Lane Primary School, Rastrick.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you for such an amazing day! The children were all engaged and interested in your Vikings activity which was well organised with great resources.

It’s been really interesting to learn about your artwork and how this relates to our topic work in school.

Samantha Turner, Year 5 Teacher, St. Malachy’s Catholic Primary School, Halifax.

Listen Up! I’m glad I met you to do all the amazing Stone Age things. It was one of the best days in Year 3 and I hope you can come in to school again.

Year 3 pupil, Sacred Heart Primary School, Sowerby Bridge.

Thank you for an excellent day Jeffrey. The children and myself thoroughly enjoyed all the activities that you brought for us to do during the Toys Through Time workshop.

Polly Williams, Year 1-2 Teacher, Heptonstall Infant School, Hebden Bridge.

Today, in Year Six, we have been developing our skills as archaeologists. We have delved deep into the past to uncover many wonderful artefacts, which we then catalogued. It was essential that we worked collaboratively on our ‘digs’ to find the lost treasures.

In the afternoon, we worked with clay to make our very own Greek pottery following authentic Greek patterns and designs. It was a really exciting day that has been the perfect culmination on all our learning about the Ancient Greeks. Thank you, Jeffrey – you were fantastic!

Alex Chamberlain, Year 6 Teacher, All Saints Junior and Infant School, Halifax.

Thank you very much for the time you spent with our Year 4 class today. It was a super morning of well planned and perfectly paced activities. All the children thoroughly enjoyed working with you Jeffrey.

David Perrin, Headteacher, Heptonstall Junior School, Hebden Bridge.

I wish that school was like this every day.

Year 6 pupil, Christchurch Primary School, Halifax.

Thank you so much for a wonderful day. The children had a fabulous time. I love how much progress they made with their art skills alongside their understanding of the local landscape, different building types, and international architecture. Seeing how inspired they were, we have decided to use the same art techniques to create our 2021 calendars – a reimagined landscape of the local area. This will be a lovely way to share the learning with parents and families.

Michelle Hamlet, Year 1 Teacher, Barkisland CE Primary School.

It’s been a very busy Stone Age day for Year 3. We have looked at historical artefacts, took part in an archeological dig, ordered events on a timeline and made our own cave drawings. The children have listened and asked so many brilliant questions. Thank you, Jeffrey.

Amy Mackay, Year 3 Teacher, Bolton Brow Academy, Sowerby Bridge.

Our son has come home from school with a huge smile and full of chatter about an amazing artist (who is not an archaeologist but could have been) and everything he has learnt/experienced today. He says it is in his top 3 of best days at school! After lots of questioning he remembered his postcard and googled you to share your work with us. Our son loves learning but not in a conventional classroom way and I’m sure today will be remembered for years to come. Thank you.

Year 5 pupil, Midgley School.

Jeffrey is a genuinely lovely chap, super creative and his sessions are great.

What a wonderful day! The kids were absolutely buzzing when we got back to school. It was just so brilliantly organised, led and resourced. They met an inspirational artist today and have real stories for their siblings and parents. I really think that understanding that everyone has different talents hit home. It is a mental health message that I’m thrilled you talked about so positively. Thank you for encouraging them to pursue the arts and let’s hope we have some superstars of the future.
